Rabat is the political and administrative capital of Morocco — home to the royal palace, government ministries and foreign embassies — yet it remains noticeably calmer and greener than nearby Casablanca. Founded in the 12th century as a Almohad ribat (fortified monastery) overlooking the mouth of the Bou Regreg river, the city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012 for its remarkable blend of Islamic, Andalusian and modernist architecture.

The must-see monuments cluster along the river and the Atlantic: the Hassan Tower, an unfinished 12th-century minaret intended to be the world's tallest at the time; the adjacent Mausoleum of Mohammed V; the Kasbah of the Udayas, a fortified blue-and-white quarter perched on a cliff above the ocean; and the Chellah, a 14th-century Merinid necropolis built over Roman ruins. The medina of Rabat is smaller and less commercial than Marrakech or Fes, easier to navigate and a pleasant introduction to Moroccan souks.

Rabat's tree-lined avenues, beach club Plage de Rabat, and the new Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art make it Morocco's most underrated weekend destination. The city is also the eastern terminus of the high-speed Al Boraq train, which connects Rabat to Casablanca in 50 minutes and to Tangier in 1h 20m.
