Imlil is the trailhead village for the High Atlas Mountains and the natural starting point for any Toubkal trek. Sitting at 1,740 m altitude only 70 km south of Marrakech, Imlil is a small terraced Berber settlement of walnut and apple groves, traditional adobe houses and a handful of mountain refuges and small guesthouses.

It is the standard departure point for the 2-day ascent of Jebel Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest peak in North Africa, as well as shorter day hikes to Aroumd, Aremd, the Sidi Chamharouch shrine and the surrounding valleys. The Kasbah du Toubkal — a restored 19th-century fortress overlooking Imlil — was the location for the 1990s film Kundun and is the village's most distinctive landmark.

Even for travellers who do not plan to trek, Imlil is one of the easiest and most rewarding day trips from Marrakech. The drive takes 90 minutes through the Asni valley, climbing into the High Atlas with spectacular views. A typical day-trip includes a guided 2–3 hour walk to Aroumd, a Berber lunch in a family home, and the return to Marrakech in the late afternoon.
