Chefchaouen — or simply Chaouen to locals — is the famous 'Blue Pearl' of the Rif Mountains in northern Morocco. Founded in 1471 by Moorish exiles fleeing the Spanish Reconquista, the small town of 40,000 people is built on a steep hillside at 600 m altitude. Almost every wall in the medina is painted in shades of blue — pale, indigo, navy, periwinkle — a tradition variously attributed to the Jewish community that settled here in the 1930s, to a tradition of warding off mosquitoes, or simply to the calming aesthetic effect.

Whatever the origin, the effect is mesmerising: stepped alleys, blue stairways, bright bougainvillea against blue walls, hand-woven blankets and djellabas hung outside whitewashed shops. Chefchaouen has become one of Morocco's most photographed destinations and the highlight of any northern Morocco itinerary.

Beyond the photogenic streets, the medina centres on the cobbled Place Outa el-Hammam with its 15th-century kasbah and the octagonal-minaret Grand Mosque. The Ras El Maa waterfall just outside the city is where local women still wash carpets and clothes. For walkers, the Akchour waterfalls and God's Bridge in the Talassemtane National Park (30 km away) make a superb day hike.
