Merzouga is the small Saharan village at the foot of Erg Chebbi — the most famous and most photographed dune field in Morocco. The erg stretches for 28 km north to south, 5 to 10 km wide, with dunes that climb up to 150 metres above the surrounding hammada. The colours shift hour by hour from pale gold at midday to deep orange at sunset, and the silence at night under a sky of stars is unforgettable.

Almost everyone who reaches Merzouga is here for the same thing: a desert camp experience. A typical 2-night Sahara trip leaves Marrakech early morning, crosses the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, stops at Aït Ben Haddou and overnights in the Dadès Valley. The second day winds through the Todra Gorge to Merzouga, where guests transfer to camels (or 4x4s) for the 1-hour ride into the dunes to a luxury Berber-style bivouac. The third day returns to Marrakech, or continues to Fes via Midelt.

Beyond the dune trek, Merzouga offers quad-biking, sandboarding, 4x4 desert circuits, visits to the nomadic Khamlia village (famous for Gnawa music descendants of sub-Saharan slaves), and birdwatching at the seasonal Dayet Srji salt lake which attracts pink flamingos. The closest airport is Errachidia (ERH, 100 km), but the vast majority of travellers arrive overland from Marrakech, Fes or Ouarzazate.
