Tetouan is the cultural capital of northern Morocco — a UNESCO-listed white medina built in the 15th century by Muslim and Jewish refugees from Granada after the Spanish Reconquista. Their Andalusian heritage is everywhere: in the architecture (whitewashed houses, tiled fountains, wooden mashrabiya screens), the cuisine, the Andalusian music traditions still taught at the Tetouan conservatory, and the unique trilingual atmosphere (Arabic, Spanish, French) that survives from the Spanish protectorate of 1912–1956.

The walled medina is one of the smallest and best-preserved in Morocco — easy to navigate, far less commercial than Marrakech or Fes, and home to seven historic gates, two former mellah (Jewish quarters), the 18th-century Royal Palace and a thriving traditional craft scene specialising in leather, copper and wool. The National Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Modern Art (housed in the former train station) are both worth an hour each.

Tetouan sits 60 km south of Tangier and 65 km north of Chefchaouen in the Rif foothills, only 10 km from the Mediterranean beach resort of M'Diq and 40 km from Martil. The city has a small airport (TTU) but most visitors arrive by road as a stop between Tangier and Chefchaouen.
