Dakhla is Morocco's farthest-flung destination — a 40-km sandy peninsula 1,500 km south of Casablanca, where the Sahara Desert meets the Atlantic Ocean. The city sits on a perfectly flat turquoise lagoon, sheltered from the open ocean by the peninsula and constantly fanned by reliable cross-shore trade winds. The combination of shallow flat water inside the lagoon, big wave swell outside, year-round 18–25 °C temperatures and almost guaranteed wind from March to October has made Dakhla one of the world's top three kitesurfing destinations.

The city itself is small and modern (population 80,000), built after 1979 when the former Spanish colonial town was integrated into Morocco. Tourism is almost entirely focused on the surrounding lagoon and the dozen or so dedicated kite-camps lining the peninsula. The most famous spots are Dakhla Attitude, Westpoint, Speed Spot and Foum Labouir — most camps offer all-inclusive packages with bungalows, gear rental, lessons and meals.

Beyond kitesurfing, Dakhla offers oyster farms (the lagoon produces a renowned oyster), 4x4 desert excursions in the surrounding hammada, the famous Dragon Island, the White Dune ('La Dune Blanche') where the dune literally pours into the sea, and whale-watching trips in the open Atlantic between January and March.
