Meknes is the smallest of Morocco's four imperial cities, but it carries one of the most fascinating histories. In the late 17th century, Sultan Moulay Ismaïl chose Meknes as his capital and embarked on a 55-year building program comparable in ambition to Louis XIV's Versailles — 40 km of double ramparts, the monumental Bab Mansour gate (perhaps the finest in North Africa), the Heri es-Souani granaries with their cathedral-like vaults, the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismaïl, the great Agdal water basin, and a series of palaces and ceremonial spaces designed to receive a court of 12,000 servants and a stable of 12,000 horses.

Meknes was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. Its medina is smaller, more easily walkable and far less crowded than Fes' — a perfect day trip from Fes (60 km, 1h) or a relaxed overnight on the way north. The Place el-Hedim, framing the Bab Mansour, is the heart of the modern old city, with food stalls, snake charmers and a daily market.

Meknes is also the launching point for two essential excursions: Volubilis, the Roman ruins 33 km north, the best-preserved Roman city in North Africa with its triumphal arch and stunning floor mosaics; and Moulay Idriss, the holy hillside town that is the resting place of the founder of the first Moroccan dynasty, and one of the country's most important Muslim pilgrimage sites.
